If you are planning to visit Sri Lanka anytime soon and wondering which beaches to visit, then read below my guide to the top 10 beaches of Sri Lanka for an amazing summer vacation:

Nilaveli

Nilaveli is by far the most beautiful beach of Sri Lanka that is famous for its breathtaking scenery. This beach features crystal-clear water that makes it an ideal spot for swimming. Unlike other beaches, Nilaveli beach has no restaurants or bars nearby. You can simply take some snacks or food with you and enjoy some quality time there along with your kids.

Mirissa

If there is any beach where you can spot whales, its Mirissa Beach. If you are visiting this beach from December to March, you can easily spot whales here. Mirissa is a very calm and peaceful place for those who want to relax away from the crowds of city. But, the beach is turned into a perfect party place once the sun goes down and you’ll see lots of people enjoying their drinks and fresh seafood.

Unawatuna

Unawatuna is one of the most breathtaking beaches of Sri Lanka, courtesy to its clear water and golden sand. This beach is popular among both locals and tourists. Located near Galle, Unawatuna beach is an ideal spot for those who like to relax on the sunbeds, swim in its water and enjoy fresh fruits, curries, rice and basically anything that you can think of from the vendors on the beach.

Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is widely known as “surfers paradise”. Every year, thousands of surfers visit Arugam Bay from April to October. The beach is not only made for surfers, its also for others who don’t want to surf but simply enjoy swimming or relaxing on the beach sand. If you walk along the beach, you’ll reach the lake area where you can witness crocodiles and elephants. Make sure to ask locals about it when you plan to visit Arugam Bay.

Hiriketiya

Surrounded by palm trees and blue ocean, Hiriketiya is a stunning beach that is worth a visit when you are in Sri Lanka. I won’t be wrong if I say that this beach is considered as “silent beach” as you’ll hardly find any visitors here. If you want to enjoy some quality time away from the tourist crowds, you must visit this beach with your friends and family.

Hikkaduwa

If you are looking for a perfect spot for snorkeling, then head off to Hikkaduwa beach in Hikkaduwa town. This jaw-dropping beach is not only famous for snorkeling but it is also very popular for its giant turtles. There are also many restaurants nearby the beach for those who want to eat delicious Sri Lankan cuisine. If you are a party person, then you must visit Hikkaduwa in July or August to attend the biggest beach festival.

Tangalle

With golden sand, palm trees and turquoise waters, Tangalle makes the perfect beach to visit in Sri Lanka. Tangalle used to be a small village but it was severely affected by the tsunami in 2004. This is the reason why this beach is so peaceful without the touristy crowd. It might not be the most famous beach, but for me, it’s a must-see in Sri Lanka if you simply want to relax on its sand while enjoying the views.

Negombo

When arriving into and departing from Sri Lanka you will heading to Negombo – 45 minutes north of Colombo. It’s not as famous as other beaches, but it’s a perfect gateway if you just want to swim in its cold water to beat the Sri Lankan hot weather.

Dickwella is an ideal beach for all the couples, courtesy to its jaw-dropping scenery and peaceful atmosphere. There are many plush resorts in the Dickwella for those who are planning to celebrate their honeymoon.

Last but not the least on our list is Bentota beach which is located on a two-hour drive from Colombo. If you want to have some quality time away from the city crowds, then this beach is a perfect spot for you. Besides swimming, Bentota beach offers plenty of activities to the visitors including jet skiing, windsurfing, snorkelling and diving.

  • I book and manage lots and lots of Sri Lankan holidays each year ranging from honeymoons to family getaways. One of the most common questions I get is "should I/we pre-book our activities prior to traveling?"
.
Personally, I don't pre-book our activities because I like to have a little freedom to change my mind or even better, meet a local that can give me a genuine insight into the activity & recommend exactly what I should do & when.
Sri Lanka is great for this because the people are so friendly & accommodating. .
If possible, one activity you should pre-book are the train journeys. They sell out very quickly! .

  • Stilt Fishing is one of the most interesting traditional fishing methods in Sri Lanka, and travellers love them 🎣
.
The beautiful sight of fishermen perched on poles as they fish skillfully during dawn, noon and dusk, can now be seen along the southern coast in towns such as Koggala, Kaththaluwa and Ahangama. .
But don't be fooled... alot of the time now, these stilt fishermen are just posing for you to get a great photo, so remember to carry some cash 🤑

  • D O S A I
Okay yes, they aren't Sri Lankan... But... You can get Dosai in Sri Lanka and I LOVE IT!
.
Dosai comes from Southern India. It's a pancake made out of rice and lentil batter, naturally fermented overnight.
.
This is traditionally a vegetarian dish, but all meat lovers will love it... I guarantee 😍
My favourite is Ghee Dosai 👌

  • Ever wanted to stay on your own private island... even just for one night?
Well yes you can, in Weligama, Sri Lanka. We did so a couple of nights ago & it was great!!
.
You can catch a boat to the island, which is great for luggage but you can also walk/swim across! It's not deep water & it adds to the adventure.
.
Such a cool little experience we had ❤

  • Should you get a driver when traveling Sri Lanka? 🚗
.
I say YES!!! If you are doing a lot of traveling. For example visiting Sigiriya, Kandy, Beach, Ella, Colombo. Then I definitely say yes!
.
The reason being... the drivers are so helpful, patient and have the best insights of what to see & where to eat plus you can travel at your own pace. Yes, it is more expensive but I think worth it.
.
If you need a driver or just interested in getting a price, send me an email & I'll get it sorted. I work with the BEST company who also drives my family around.
