Sri Lanka is home to some of the best beaches in the world. No matter which part of the country you are in, you are going to find a beach in some corner. If you are a beach lover like me, Sri Lanka is surely going to surprise you with its jaw-dropping beaches along with the scrumptious seafood. If you are planning to visit Sri Lanka anytime soon and wondering which beaches to visit, then read below my guide to the top 10 beaches of Sri Lanka for an amazing summer vacation:


Nilaveli is by far the most beautiful beach of Sri Lanka that is famous for its breathtaking scenery. This beach features crystal-clear water that makes it an ideal spot for swimming. Unlike other beaches, Nilaveli beach has no restaurants or bars nearby. You can simply take some snacks or food with you and enjoy some quality time there along with your kids.

If there is any beach where you can spot whales, its Mirissa Beach. If you are visiting this beach from December to March, you can easily spot whales here. Mirissa is a very calm and peaceful place for those who want to relax away from the crowds of city. But, the beach is turned into a perfect party place once the sun goes down and you’ll see lots of people enjoying their drinks and fresh seafood.

Unawatuna is one of the most breathtaking beaches of Sri Lanka, courtesy to its clear water and golden sand. This beach is popular among both locals and tourists. Located near Galle, Unawatuna beach is an ideal spot for those who like to relax on the sunbeds, swim in its water and enjoy fresh fruits, curries, rice and basically anything that you can think of from the vendors on the beach.

Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is widely known as “surfers paradise”. Every year, thousands of surfers visit Arugam Bay from April to October. The beach is not only made for surfers, its also for others who don’t want to surf but simply enjoy swimming or relaxing on the beach sand. If you walk along the beach, you’ll reach the lake area where you can witness crocodiles and elephants. Make sure to ask locals about it when you plan to visit Arugam Bay.

Surrounded by palm trees and blue ocean, Hiriketiya is a stunning beach that is worth a visit when you are in Sri Lanka. I won’t be wrong if I say that this beach is considered as “silent beach” as you’ll hardly find any visitors here. If you want to enjoy some quality time away from the tourist crowds, you must visit this beach with your friends and family.

If you are looking for a perfect spot for snorkeling, then head off to Hikkaduwa beach in Hikkaduwa town. This jaw-dropping beach is not only famous for snorkeling but it is also very popular for its giant turtles. There are also many restaurants nearby the beach for those who want to eat delicious Sri Lankan cuisine. If you are a party person, then you must visit Hikkaduwa in July or August to attend the biggest beach festival.

With golden sand, palm trees and turquoise waters, Tangalle makes the perfect beach to visit in Sri Lanka. Tangalle used to be a small village but it was severely affected by the tsunami in 2004. This is the reason why this beach is so peaceful without the touristy crowd. It might not be the most famous beach, but for me, it’s a must-see in Sri Lanka if you simply want to relax on its sand while enjoying the views.

When arriving into and departing from Sri Lanka you will heading to Negombo – 45 minutes north of Colombo. It’s not as famous as other beaches, but it’s a perfect gateway if you just want to swim in its cold water to beat the Sri Lankan hot weather.

Dickwella is an ideal beach for all the couples, courtesy to its jaw-dropping scenery and peaceful atmosphere. Besides its picturesque scenery, Dickwella beach is famous for a number of water sports including snorkelling. There are many plush resorts in the Dickwella for those who are planning to celebrate their honeymoon.

Last but not the least on our list is Bentota beach which is located on a two-hour drive from Colombo. If you want to have some quality time away from the city crowds, then this beach is a perfect spot for you. Besides swimming, Bentota beach offers plenty of activities to the visitors including jet skiing, windsurfing, snorkelling and diving.
